FGI Appoints James R. “Skip” Gregory to Board of Directors

Press Releases

ST. LOUIS – The Facility Guidelines Institute (FGI) is pleased to announce the appointment of James R. “Skip” Gregory, NCARB, to its Board of Directors. Skip is president of Health Facility Consulting, LLC, in Tallahassee, Fla., where he specializes in health care code consulting and provides training seminars and presentations for health care professionals and associations.

Skip has been a member of FGI’s Health Guidelines Revision Committee (HGRC), the body responsible for updating the Guidelines for Design and Construction documents since 1992. In recognition of his tremendous service to FGI and the HGRC, Skip was awarded the J. Armand Burgun Pioneer Award from the FGI Board of Directors in 2018. Among his many contributions, Skip chaired the mobile/transportable medical units task group during the 2018 revision cycle, bringing the requirements into alignment with the classification system for imaging and examination/treatment, procedure, and operating rooms. Further, Skip was the driving force behind the reorganization of the Guidelines in 2010 to mirror the numbering layout of other national building and fire codes.

“Like no other single source document in the world, the FGI Guidelines represents the best and latest fundamental design and construction criteria for all types of health and residential care facilities,” says Mr. Gregory. “Revised every four years by a nationally recognized committee of health care experts with public input from a huge user base, adoption of the latest revision is mandatory to stay current with the ever-changing world of health care service and technology.”

Skip is a registered architect who served more than 17 years as bureau chief in the Office of Plans and Construction for the state of Florida, where he was the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) for design and construction issues for all licensed health care facilities. Skip is an outspoken advocate for patient-centered care in hospitals and resident-directed care and household designs in nursing homes.

In addition to his work with FGI, Skip serves on many national code committees and advocacy groups to humanize health care environments, including the NFPA Health Care Section Executive Board; the Health Care Section Life Safety Code Review Subcommittee; NFPA 110/111 Technical Committee, Standard for Emergency and Stand By Power Systems; UL Standards Technical Panels 1069 and 2560; ASHRAE Standard 170, Ventilation for Health Care Facilities (past); and the Advisory Committee on Structural Safety, Department of Veterans Affairs Facilities. Skip also is a Lifetime Member of the Florida Healthcare Engineering Association (FHEA).

Skip’s passion and commitment to health care design, safety, and compliance are evident by the many contributions he has made to the industry. We congratulate Skip on his accomplishments and welcome him to the FGI Board of Directors.
