2022 Revision Cycle
The Guidelines for Design and Construction documents are updated every four years. For the 2022 edition, the revision process commenced in the spring of 2018 when the Steering Committee of the FGI Health Guidelines Revision Committee (HGRC) began reviewing new member candidates. Invitation letters were sent over the summer, and the 2022 HGRC membership was finalized by October 2018. At the same time, FGI invested in development of a new online proposal/comment platform to support collection of input from the industry.
Public participation in the revision process is vital to keep the Guidelines current with industry practices, and the Guidelines revision cycle offers several opportunities for Guidelines users to contribute to development of the standards many states use to regulate design and construction of these facility types (see the FGI adoption map for more information). The first opportunity was the public proposal period, which ended in June 2019, during which users of the Guidelines were encouraged to submit proposals to change any language in the 2018 Guidelines edition. The second opportunity—the public comment period—opened on July 1, 2020.
During the comment period, which closed on September 30, 2020, the draft 2022 documents were available for review and comments on the proposed changes were accepted. As well, FGI continued to accept recommendations for Beyond Fundamentals; these resources support the basic guidance in the Guidelines documents or address operational or best practice issues not suitable for inclusion in the Guidelines but of interest to those designing, building, and operating health and residential care facilities.
All submitted comments and suggestions were available for public review throughout the comment period, and interested parties could submit opinions supporting or opposing any of them.
After the comment period closed, the HGRC reviewed all the comments, including submitted opinions. The committee members discussed and voted on the comments, resulting in final manuscripts for the 2022 Guidelines documents, which are scheduled to be published in the spring of 2022. Beyond Fundamentals suggestions were also reviewed to determine whether and how to move them forward.
Supplementing the work of the HGRC, the FGI Benefit-Cost Committee is evaluating the impact of changes to requirements in the Guidelines and will publish an analysis of their determinations. (To read the benefit-cost analysis comparing the 2018 edition to the 2014 edition, click here.)
