FGI Bulletin #30
2026 FGI Codes and FGI Handbooks: Update on Release

Many in the FGI community have been looking ahead to the release of the 2026 FGI Codes for Planning and Design, and we’re grateful for the continued interest and engagement.
FGI is now planning for a fall 2026 launch that will include both the new FGI Codes for Planning and Design and the companion FGI Handbooks for Planning and Design.
This updated timeline allows additional coordination across platforms and publications to support a more complete and connected release experience. As always, the priority is to provide resources that are clear, reliable, and practical for the professionals who use them every day.
The 2026 FGI Codes establish the enforceable minimum requirements for planning and design of health and residential care facilities, while the new FGI Handbooks will provide explanatory guidance, graphics, examples, and additional context to support interpretation and application in practice.
The FGI Codes reflect the work of FGI’s multidisciplinary, consensus-based revision process and our continued effort to support safe, functional, and forward-looking health and residential care environments.
We’ll continue sharing updates and resources as we move closer to launch.
FGI Supports Pro Codes Act

FGI supports the bipartisan Pro Codes Act, legislation aimed at protecting the ability of standards development organizations to sustain independent, consensus-based code development while also promoting public access to adopted standards.
FGI is concerned about the growing unauthorized reproduction and distribution of copyrighted standards content by third-party platforms such as UpCodes. Revenue from the lawful sale and licensing of FGI publications supports the extensive volunteer, staff, and technical work required to develop and maintain the FGI Codes for Planning and Design.
The Pro Codes Act would affirm copyright protections for standards development organizations while also ensuring that incorporated standards remain publicly accessible online. FGI urges stakeholders, partners, and members of the design and health care communities who value the continued integrity of the independent standards development process to take action in support of the legislation.
More information on the legislation is available at: https://www.procodesact.com.

New Errata for 2022 Guidelines
New errata have been published for the 2022 Guidelines for Design and Construction of Residential Health, Care, and Support Facilities and the 2022 Guidelines for Design and Construction of Hospitals.
2022 Residential Guidelines
Errata published March 30, 2026, provide corrections on the following:
- Section 4.1-2.2.2.2 (4) (Assisted Living Settings: Space requirements—Resident apartment accommodations) removed a requirement for emergency shutoffs that was redundant to Section 2.1-7.2.2 (Common Elements: Architectural Details).
- Section 4.1-7.2.2 (Architectural Details): Clarifies that omission of emergency shutoffs in private assisted living apartments is permitted.
2022 Hospital Guidelines
An erratum published April 23, 2026, updates requirements for pre- and post-procedure patient care areas.
- Section 2.2-3.5.8.15 (2) (Pre- and post-procedure patient care area—For Class 2 imaging…) clarifies that one patient care station area shall be provided for each Class 2 imaging room unless the safety risk assessment supports a different ratio.
FGI’s printable errata sheets are helpful for those using paperbacks of the Guidelines. For licensed users, updates are incorporated directly into the digital versions.
Be sure to check the Errata and Addenda page on the FGI website regularly to stay current with the latest corrections.
Interpretations Issued for 2022 Guidelines
FGI received an inquiry regarding the 2022 Hospital and Outpatient Guidelines asking if all procedure rooms have the same requirement for flooring and wall bases in the exam/treatment, procedure, and operating room classification tables (Hospital Table 2.2-1 and Outpatient Table 2.1-4).
The interpretations committee considered this question and agreed that procedure rooms, regardless of procedure type, should have the same flooring and wall base requirements as other semi-restricted rooms (e.g., Class 2 imaging rooms). Additionally, the committee notes that this reflects an evolution in requirements over time rather than an error in the 2022 edition. This revision was proposed and accepted during the 2026 revision cycle and has been incorporated into the 2026 FGI Hospital Code and 2026 FGI Outpatient Code.
This interpretation has been added to the formal interpretations listed on FGI’s website. Interpretations of Guidelines are processed under the rules of the Health Guidelines Revision Committee (HGRC) and are considered an official position of the HGRC.
Looking Ahead: The 2030 FGI Code Revision Committee

FGI has begun the process of forming the 2030 FGI Code Revision Committee (CRC)—the multidisciplinary group responsible for developing the next edition of the FGI Codes for Planning and Design. Formerly known as the Health Guidelines Revision Committee (HGRC), the CRC will continue FGI’s consensus-based approach to advancing the health care-built environment.
Work is currently underway to establish the 2030 Steering Committee, which will help guide the overall revision process and determine members of the 2030 CRC. A targeted call for new CRC members is planned for the fall, with opportunities for professionals across disciplines to contribute their expertise.
Participation in the CRC provides a unique opportunity to collaborate with peers, share knowledge, and contribute to shaping the future of health and residential care planning and design.
